Chicken Gumbo Sloppy Joes

Ingredients
1 lb. hamburger
1 can Campbell's Chicken Gumbo soup
ketchup, mustard, and brown sugar to taste

Directions
Cook hamburger; drain. Mix in soup and boil for a while until it is no longer runny. Add ketchup, mustard, and brown sugar to taste. Serve on hoagie or hamburger buns. Makes enough for 4-6 sandwiches.

Notes:  This is the way B's mom makes sloppy joes. I liked it enough to have seconds, even though we ran out of buns. Updated 10/16/11 with a new photo.

  1. It was pretty runny when I first added the soup, so I boiled it down for a while to get the right consistency that I wanted.

  2. My husband wanted me to make these really bad, and so I googled it. I found your blog with this recipe, and he said it's the exact recipe his mama made him when he was a boy. I hope you don't mind me using it. Thank you.

  3. We grew up with these...called them "Dutch Sloppy Joes" in our family. I'm trying to make a big batch for my niece's 1st birthday party, but CANNOT find Campbell's chicken gumbo anywhere...yipes.

  4. When we first made this recipe we lived in Utah and we were able to find Campbell's chicken gumbo soup. Since then we have moved first to California and then to Massachusetts, and we haven't been able to find it in either place. So either Campbell's quit making it or they only sell it in certain markets. My wife has suggested replacing the chicken gumbo soup with chicken and rice soup, which is generally easier to find.

  5. Looking for a recipe that was a "swedish meatball" type. It used a can of Campbells chicken gumbo soup and another kind. Can anyone help?

    Thank-you! Adair

  7. We've moved a couple of times since my last comment. I don't think we found any of the chicken gumbo soup in Indiana, but we found it when we moved to Texas.

  8. I run a grocery store and FYI the gumbo is the same as its always been campbells only labels it as light since its ingredients qualify it as such. Its always been light only now the label says so since more people have become conscious of those type of things.
